A HEALTHY LOVE FOR HOUSE & DUBSTEP

ESP28AUG09FLYER

A SPECIAL SESSION OF WAREHOUSE MUSIC

FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2009

It all started with warehouse music.  Back in the early days of rave, when promoters would risk breaking into an old warehouse and set up sound/visuals to host parties and raves, the music was generally a mix of disco records and early eighties dance.  Before it morphed into the various sub-genres it is categorized by today, the music was simply referred to as “warehouse” music.  The term “warehouse” soon became “house,” as people would refer to it that way in the record shops, simply shortening the description of the music they heard at the raves…

But the truth is that house is more than a label for this music.  It is a vibe.  It is the drive behind the music.  It’s the groove.  House ain’t all that complicated; put the track on, get your groove on. House music is sexier.  It’s deeper.  It’s the universal language for dance.  It goes straight into your soul.  Funky.  Hypnotic.  Throbbing.

Ghost Industries proudly represents the spirit of warehouse music with our next session of ESP.  To best illustrate the beauty and appeal of house music we have asked our friend and seasoned Atlanta dj Heather B to make us sweat.  She’s been a staple in the scene for over a decade, and has held multiple residencies throughout the city, including The Wine Loft and Bazzaar.  She’s been booked alongside many of the biggest names in dance music such as Eric Kupper, Vickter Duplaix, and Tiesto, to name a few, by a host of Atlanta promoters and event organizers.  In short, Heather’s name was the first to come to mind for ESP.  Expect nothing short than a set of groovy, sexy house from one of our city’s finest.DZK

Ben “Andersven” is without doubt one of the best djs in the dirty south, otherwise known across the entire southeast as Atlanta’s drum & bass dj DZK. Don’t miss the chance to hear a bangin’ set of hard trance from Ben!  You know he’ll bring the same slammin style as he does when he’s rockin’ shows armed with mash-ups and exclusives!

For all of our bass-loving ‘headz out there, you know Ghost Industries has much love for the Atlanta Dubstep crew, who will be performing a special warm-up session with their own set of fatt tracks, so be sure come early to catch Jeremy, Inferno, and Crookhaven between 7-10pm.  Then antiMatter will handle the transition between dubstep and house, and X-Jay will close the night with his individual take on the tech-house sound.

WINTER BLITZ @ BEYOND, ATL 31.JAN.09

What a great time. The venue was tucked away deep in Atlanta’s west side, surrounded by anonymous buildings. It was tricky finding the place because it wasn’t actually on the street from the address. The general complex was, but the entrance to Beyond faced the intersecting street, Metropolitan Pkwy, behind a chain link fence guarding the narrow passage way to a short set of stairs that led inside. Thankfully, Girly Beats stood at the street to guide us in!

Once inside, the atmosphere was dark. The high ceiling and open layout made it comfortable to move around, and the sound filled all the corners of the huge space. The bartenders were real cool, although I did get a Sunny-Delight-and-Vodka once instead of a Cranberry and Vodka, like I’d asked. No big deal.

The DJ who was bringing in the decks and mixer was not going to show, so I loaded up all my gear and set it up, ready to go, when he arrived at the last minute with everything in tow. We agreed that it would be best that we just leave mine put away, as I knew I wasn’t staying until 9 am. Needless to say, the dance really got moving with my first track, You’re Not Me by Hatfield & Beckers, and kept heaving through a steep selection of Barem’s minimal gems.  I built up the pace enough to drop Nine Inch Nails‘ remix of Happiness In Slavery, from the Fixed EP.  Grab it below.  It’s hard and noisy and harsh.  Classic Nine Inch Nails.

About ninety-five minutes into the set, I kicked up the heat and brought in a selection of some mean, dirty, techy breaks, and with just a quater-hour left of my set, I snuck in some tasty drum & bass tracks.  After considering Voytech’s request to bring the energy back to a “housey” level, I ended my set with an older tune,  Junkie XL’s Blue Pill, Red Pill, from 2003’s The Animatrix Soundtrack, which still sounds fresh, to the ecstatic and enthusiastic surprise of the crowd.

I don’t usually get to play techno sets, so I was really looking forward to this one.  Thanks to Mandy [Girly Beats], X-Jay, and Voytech for having me out.

antiMatter techno mix: 2Sdae

:: 2Sdae ::

:: This mix is very different from what AntiMatter is known for – drum & bass.  2Sdae is a collection of minimal house and techno tracks.  It’s a great selection, full of bleeps and bass with some haunting vocals thrown in for good measure.  Davide Squillace’s Sukkin Mutik kicks things off with its bubbly bassline and clickity percussion.  The first half of the mix is all hypnotic rhythms, relentless beats (check Dubfire’s rework of Spastik) and alien soundscapes (So Serial).  A heavy of dose of deep techno rounds off the set, with some beautiful remixes from Satoshie Tomiie and the darkly sensual World Keeps Turning (Highfish & Zander Remix) by Psychonauts.

Get it now while you can!!!
